Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are making waves, both on and off the court. Their WNBA draft alone garnered nearly 2.5 million viewers, the highest viewers to date. This is why I was taken aback, but sadly not surprised, to see that these ladies are extremely underpaid in comparison to their male counterparts. For example, despite being the first pick in the draft, Caitlin Clark’s salary is set at $76,535 annually. Most NBA players make over 100 times what the new women's players will make. Not only does the industry support its players, but society as a whole needs to better support women. We, as fans, need to put our money where our values are. Attend their games. Buy tickets. Support these women with the same fervor as we do with the NBA.The pay gap persists, not only in sports but across all industries. Women only earn 84 cents for every dollar that white man makes. For women of color, the disparities only widen. The gap is narrower in the STEM field, which is why we try to increase access to resources and opportunities for our students. However, until the culture in tech shifts to valuing women’s voices, there’s still a glass ceiling preventing our students from achieving their potential. It’s time for leaders across all industries to put their money where their mouth is and pay women equally. Frankly, it’s long overdue. Read more: https://bit.ly/44SZHgz

These women are making a lot of [men] a lot of money right now... We've been tuning in from our house! Trying to not only give ratings and support, but make sure our kids see us watching just as much women's sports as men.

It was wonderful to attend Dean Jack Knott’s Year-End Celebration honoring some of the people and events that made this past year at Steinhardt so outstanding. It was another year of impact for us on the Alumni Advisory Board, and I loved seeing some of my fellow members: Mickela Mallozzi, Sergio Pardo Lopez, Donna Cantrell PT, DPT, Gunjan Banerji, and Caity Moseman Wadler––you are all amazing! And it was great to spend a little time with Fabienne Doucet, the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools. Fun fact: I worked at the Metro Center in my early days of getting my PhD at Steinhardt! I truly enjoyed the event and love giving back to the Steinhardt community.

This #WomanInSTEM invented the world’s first 3D makeup printer. Grace Choi is the founder of the tech company Mink Beauty, a makeup printer that can turn any image into a wearable shade of cosmetics. If that wasn’t cool enough, she also uses tech to create viral beauty filters for TikTok. As a TikTok Effect House Ambassador, Choi has created filters for Fenty Beauty, Dior, Kosas, and many more.“[For me], beauty is the gateway to tech,” she says. STEM education doesn’t have to be a monolith. From art to music to, in this case, makeup, there are so many ways to make learning fun. I hope we consider stories like these when creating curriculums for our students or thinking about different types of opportunities to enter the tech space. Grace has spoken to our students in the past, but we have to make this happen again! Phenomenal work! #WomenEmpoweringWomenWednesdayshttps://lnkd.in/eK6BEPuk

Imagine starting college at only 10 years old! Congratulations to Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II, who recently earned her doctorate at age 17. Dr. Tillman has a Master’s degree in Science from Excelsior College and a Doctorate in Behavioral Health Management from Arizona State University. What’s equally impressive is that she gives back to her community by making space for other young women in STEM to follow in her footsteps. Dr. Tillman is the founder and CEO of a leadership institute that integrates the arts with STEM education. She believes, “adding art and putting a focus on it throughout science, technology, engineering, and math makes kids excited to learn all those things. It opens them up to all the possibilities and knowledge within STEM.”Her innovative approach to education is not only inspiring the next generation of leaders but also reshaping how we integrate creativity with scientific learning. Way to go, Dorothy! https://bit.ly/3UQCqr5

I'm thrilled to see this amazing feature about Break Through Tech in the New York Times! Congratulations to their founder Judith Spitz, Ph.D. and the entire team for this well-deserved recognition. The article sheds light on the barriers and disparities that marginalized communities face in AI and the tech industry—an issue that is deeply relevant to our mission at Girls Who Code.As the article highlights: "Only 36% of graduating college seniors had a paid internship, according to data from the National Association of Colleges and Employers. By contrast, of the nearly 150 students who completed the A.I. program over the last two years, Break Through Tech said it had placed 82% in paid internships at employers including Accenture, Amazon, Fidelity Investments, Google, Mass General Hospital, and Microsoft."This is a powerful reminder of why it's crucial for everyone to have a seat at the table in AI. It's also inspiring to see another nonprofit championing equity and inclusion in tech. We’re so grateful to Break Through Tech for breaking down barriers and leveling the playing field for the next generation of diverse tech talent. The article is a must-read, so check out the link below to read the full piece. https://lnkd.in/enR27TEa

Now, this is what an engineer looks like! Congratulations to Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi, PhD Dosunmu-Ogunbi who recently made history as the first Black woman at the University of Michigan to earn a Ph.D. in robotics. As the daughter of Nigerian immigrants and a woman in STEM, she is such a positive role model for our students. In fact, she once visited Girls Who Code high school Clubs students in hopes of inspiring them as they change the face of tech. Thank you for paying it forward, Oluwami! https://lnkd.in/ePhjYeQG

Congratulations to my dear friend Mark Colón on his recent induction as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Housing! It was an honor to cheer him on last night at the ceremony at the Pentagon. Mark has been a longtime leader and advocate for access to affordable housing, and I'm thrilled to see him take on this pivotal role. Having worked together as organizers years ago, I have no doubt that he will use this position to transform lives and champion equity. Well deserved, Mark!

It was such an honor to speak at the #MomsFirstSummit! I’m so proud of Reshma Saujani and Moms First for putting an incredible event together and holding space for such vital conversations about women's empowerment and dreaming without limits. Meeting and interviewing NASA astronaut Christina Koch was incredible! I knew about her accomplishments and fantastic professional journey, but what really touched me was her warmth and authenticity. She shared so much of herself in our interview, offering personal insights and reflections that resonated deeply for me and I suspect so many others at the summit. I’m grateful to know her, and look forward to sharing more of her story with the Girls Who Code community! It was inspiring to also connect with and learn from leaders and mothers across all industries including, Hillary Clinton, Elaine Welteroth, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and my friend and former Girls Who Code Board member Tiffany Dufu. I was also able to get a few minutes with Governor Kathy Hochul at the event. Arvind Krishna and I are energized about our plans with the Governor to shape the future of AI in New York. Please stay tuned for more soon!

I’m thrilled to be part of today’s #MomsFirstSummit, an event that truly celebrates the resilience of moms everywhere. This summit, spearheaded by our founder Reshma Saujani, is a testament to the equity work she's doing for mothers with Moms First. It was an honor to talk to record-holding astronaut and longtime STEM advocate Christina Koch. I’m truly inspired by her bravery and her story of how she pushed past imposter syndrome to pursue her dreams. It was also great to connect with Governor Kathy Hochul as well. I’m grateful for all of these leaders and change agents, and I can’t wait to see what is in store for the rest of the summit.

FKA Twigs is reclaiming her power in the AI space by creating her own deepfake. The singer went before the U.S. Senate to fight for artists to have ownership over how AI uses their voice and likeness. By creating a deepfake, she now can grant or deny who has access to her identity online and can use AI for herself as a tool for her own discretion. She plans to use her deepfake “AI Twigs” for her social media accounts, press, and promotion, giving herself more time for her other projects. This is a perfect example of how AI can be used for both justice and injustice depending on who is leading these conversations. That’s why our equity work is so important in this sector. Marginalized people must be able to use AI to tell their own stories. To create a more equitable world, it’s important that everyone should have a seat at the table in tech, including women and people of color. Read more: https://lnkd.in/g3EjETMc
